Going out and Playing Pokémon GO turned out to be fatal for an 18-year-old Guatemalan boy, after he was shot and killed for breaking into a house while playing the game. This is the first ever death reported while playing the popular Augmented Reality game that has now become a global rage.

Jerson Lopez de Leon, was reportedly playing with his cousin Daniel Moises Picen, 17, and ended up breaking and entering a home in Chiquimula (170 kms from Guatemala city) to catch a Pokemon.

Jerson was shot and killed, while Daniel was badly injured. The police said that it was still unclear if both teenagers were playing the world-popular AR game, or why they were shot. Police is also looking for the occupants of an agricultural van that was seen racing away from the scene, as reported by The Mirror. Local reports said that the police found 20 bullet casings from the scene of the shooting.

Jerson’s mother said that the teenagers had gone out of the house to play Pokemon GO.

The location feature of the app makes the player walk around in order to catch Pokemon. This makes for people ending up walking into parks, monuments, police stations, banks, etc.

Festive offer

It still isn’t clear why the two were attacked, police said. But they have speculated that it may have been that the attackers found the teenagers using the app itself – which has location features that make it possible to encourage people to go to specific areas, or to locate players.

There have been previous instances of shots being fired on Pokémon GO players. Two teenagers aged 19 and 16 were shot at while they were sitting in a car and playing Pokémon GO in Florida last week.
