Record year for Cardiff construction company

A Cardiff-headquartered construction company has reported a record turnover of more than £9m in its 82nd year of trading.

Atkin Trade Specialists said turnover was £9.38m in its 2015/16 financial year, compared to £7.46m a year earlier. It is also expecting a profit increase to £395,000, up from £276,000 in 2014/15.

Managing director Robert Atkin said: "My father established the business in 1934. We have grown to work on large-scale construction projects across the whole of the UK, and our 82nd year in business has proved to be a successful one; with turnover surpassing £10m and projects keeping us occupied into mid 2017. It’s a very healthy environment at present."

The company, which is located in Cardiff docks, has worked on development projects for Chaucer House, and CATS College in Canterbury, Kent.

Atkin Trade Specialists said it has evolved "dramatically" in recent years with its Metsec Metframe being central to the business' offering. The pre-panelised steel frame product is used to provide shell structure for medium rise buildings, of up to 11 storeys tall, and is suitable for various sectors including: hotels, student accommodation, care homes and apartment blocks.

Atkin added: "We have supplied Metframe structural solutions to developments throughout the UK ranging from Cardiff to Kent, Hampshire and Dorset, London, to Devon and the Midlands. It has been a huge area of growth for us over the last ten years."
