After BJP MLA Manda Mhatre complained about the "humiliating treatment" meted out to her by Navi Mumbai municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, the state government has promised a probe by a senior official into the matter. The state has also asked the Mumbai commissioner of police to submit a report regarding a deputy commissioner of police's (DCP) six-month delay in replying to a letter sent by Congress MLA Nitesh Rane.

Speaking in the state Assembly on Wednesday, Mhatre said Mundhe kept her waiting for half-an-hour when she went to meet him regarding the concerns of the sons-of-soil and Navi Mumbai gaothans' project-affected people.

Mhatre said Mundhe told her she could enter his office only after she has sent him a chit, inquiring whether he was free and whether she should return later.

Mhatre also blamed Mundhe for a "defaming" news report related to her residence and asked what action would be taken against such officers. Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil too lashed out at Mundhe and said when he toured Solapur to review the drought situation, Mundhe – who was the district collector – remained sitting in his chair and asked them to give their representation.

"Is there no responsibility on the chief of the state to keep a check on officers?" questioned Vikhe Patil, adding that letters from his office to ministers and officials also failed to elicit response. Noting that the "arrogance" in bureaucracy was on a rise, he stressed on the need to send a strong message across.

NCP's Jayant Patil pointed out how a government resolution (GR) had spelled out the courteous manner in which officials needed to treat elected representatives and said during Mundhe's stint in Solapur, he even arrested guardian minister and local MLA Vijaykumar Deshmukh.

Minister for parliamentary affairs Girish Bapat said the state government would depute a senior official to conduct an inquiry into the matter and the report would be submitted in the House during the ongoing monsoon session.

Nitesh Rane, too, had complained about how a deputy commissioner of police had not replied to his letter seeking information about police protection provided to private people for as long as six months.
