Soldier cremated with honours

The mortal remains of Lance Havaldar Umeshappa (37), a soldier who had died in an accident due to landslips in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, was cremated with full military honours in his native Vitagondanakoppa village near here on Wednesday.

He was serving with Madras Engineering Group(MEG), a group of the Corps of Engineers of Indian Army from past 17 years. He is survived by wife Veena, three-year-old son Tanmay and daughter Sriraksha, who is seven-months-old.

The body was flown to Bengaluru where it was given a guard of honour and was brought to his native village during the wee hours of Wednesday. The body was taken in a procession from his house to the cremation ground.

The district police and the Army personnel present there gave gun salute in honour.

Shikaripur MLA B.Y. Raghavendra, Shivamogga Rural MLA Sharada Poorya Naik, MLC R. Prasanna Kumar, Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri, Superintendent of Police Ravi Channannanavar, senior officers of MEG attended the cremation.
