MUMBAI: The MNS on Wednesday accused the BMC of appointing a
private firm as a third-party quality auditor without calling for tenders in 2012 and then filing an
FIR against the same company in the Rs 352-crore road scam this year. Sandeep Deshpande, MNS party leader in the BMC, sought an adjournment over the issue after claiming that in the last few years the BMC has arbitrarily used Section 72 (3) of the
Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act 1888 which gives the civic chief the power to appoint contractors without inviting tenders for contracts costing over Rs 3 lakh in an emergency situation.
“In 2012, the BMC appointed
SGS India Pvt Ltd Company as third-party quality auditor, and then this year, filed an FIR against it. What went wrong that the BMC had to take such a big step?” Deshpande was supported by all corporators in the standing committee, including from Shiv Sena and BJP. The BMC admitted that since February 2012, Rs 547.8 crore of work has been given under this section of the MMC Act.
