Kolkata to witness grand Trinamool rally as Mamata makes first appearance on Martyrs Day after poll victory

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Thursday, is all set to make her first public appearance since her victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections in May.

Lakhs of people are expected to gather for the mega Trinamool Congress (TMC) rally outside Victoria House in Esplanade, where the TMC leader will address the crowd from various parts of the state and the country.

The annual rally is organised to observe Martyrs' Day in remembrance of the 13 Congress youths killed in police firing on July 21, 1993.

However, sources say that Mamata is also likely to use the occasion to thank supporters for her thumping victory in the Assembly polls.

The chief minister will be accompanied by Trinamool supporters to mark the occasion.

MASSIVE PREPARATIONS FOR JULY 21 EVENT

Life-sized hoardings of Mamata Banerjee have been positioned at various places to gather crowd for the Trinamool Congress' mega event.

Senior party leaders like Subrato Baksi, Mukul Roy, Firhad Hakim, Partho Chatterjee, Aroop Biswas, Sovendeb Chattopadhaya, Gautam Deb, Bratya Basu, Suvendu Adhikari, Sovan Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Dutta and Sujit Bose have been appointed to oversee preparations for the same.

The famous Salt Lake stadium has already been decked up with party flags and banners. Tents have been installed for workers who have already arrived a day in advance from far flung areas.

ACCOMMODATION ARRANGED FOR OUTSIDERS

"We are expecting a large gathering. Subrata Bakshi is holding meetings with police officials regarding the traffic arrangements. Dharamsalas and lodges near Sealdah and Howrah Station have been booked for people coming from across Bengal," Firhad Hakim, Urban Development Minister, said.

Medical camps will also be set up to attend to emergencies.

Special control rooms and police camps have also been positioned to ensure smooth passage of crowd and traffic. Over 60 personnel are deployed to maintain vigilance around the stadium.

In addition to the above forces, nearly 3,000 police ranging from Deputy Commissioner to traffic sergeants, will be deployed at various important check points across the city.
