Jonathan Guzman stopped Shingo Wake in the 11th round to win the vacant IBF super-bantamweight title on Wednesday.
The unbeaten 27-year-old from the Dominican Republic outclassed the home fighter in Osaka, Japan to claim the title that Carl Frampton vacated in order to challenge for Leo Santa Cruz's WBA 'Super' featherweight crown.
Guzman (22-0 KO22) floored Wake four times en route to a merciful late stoppage, including a pair of knockdowns in the second round that set the tone.
Wake, already bloodied, picked himself up again in the third and did well to battle through a fifth-round knockdown as Guzman threatened a quick finish.
Only with Wake's cheek badly swollen did the referee finally call a halt to proceedings in the penultimate round to hand Guzman his maiden world title in his 22nd fight.
Guzman has yet to be taken the full distance in a fight and joins Guillermo Rigondeaux (WBA 'Super'), Nehomar Cermeno (WBA 'regular'), Hugo Ruiz (WBC) and Nonito Donaire (WBO) as world champions at 122lbs.
