Big puncher Jonathan Guzman scored four knockdowns and eventually knocked out Shingo Wake in the 11th round to win a vacant junior featherweight world title on Wednesday at Edion Arena in Osaka, Japan.
Guzman (22-0, 22 KOs) scored two knockdowns in the second round and one each in the third and fifth rounds before referee Wayne Hedgpeth stopped the one-sided fight 2 minutes, 16 seconds into the 11th round, with Wake bloodied and taking a beating.
The 26-year-old Guzman, of the Dominican Republic, and Japanese southpaw Wake (20-5-2, 12 KOs), 28, were vying for the 122-pound belt vacated by Northern Ireland's Carl Frampton, who is moving up in weight to challenge featherweight world titleholder Leo Santa Cruz on July 30.
Also on the card, flyweight titleholder Kazuto Ioka (20-1, 12 KOs), 27, of Japan, scored two knockdowns en route to knocking out 21-year-old Nicaraguan Keyvin Lara (18-2-1, 6 KOs) 1 minute, 11 seconds into the 11th round.
Ioka, a former strawweight and junior flyweight world titleholder, retained his secondary flyweight belt for the third time. Next up for Ioka could be a fight with so-called "super" titleholder Juan Francisco Estrada (33-2, 24 KOs), of Mexico, who holds two world titles. The WBA has ordered them to meet in a mandatory bout. They have until Aug. 20 to make a deal or the fight rights will be auctioned at a purse bid.
