Jaipur: A major fire broke out in a slipper manufacturing unit in Vishwakarma industrial area on Monday night, triggering a widespread panic in the area.
According to fire department officials, the incident took place at 12.30 am inside a three-storey factory owned by a Jaipur-based trader.
"An electric fault may have led to the fire. The security guard of the unit raised an alarm and informed the owner about the incident," said Sanjay Sharma, chief fire safety officer.
As soon as the flames spread to the second floor of the building, the fire officials removed containers of highly inflammable chemicals stored inside the building.
The fire department deployed 14 fire tenders along with 100 private tankers to douse the fire. "Several teams worked in multiple shifts to control the fire. Fortunately, there was no casualty as our teams removed the inflammable chemicals from the building," Sharma added. According to officials, the raw material and equipment kept inside the factory premises also got damaged. This incident in the industrial area has once again exposed the lack of fire safety measures adopted by the owners of small and medium-scale factories.
"I was taken aback when I saw that a three-storey factory engaged in production of rubber slippers had only one fire extinguisher. There were some highly inflammable chemicals stored in the building," said an official.
