Chennai: The Coast Guard on Monday apprehended a boat with 11 Myanmarese on board on account of suspicion near the Narcondum Island. The boat and its crew were taken to Port Blair for investigation and later handed over to local police.
A statement from the Coast Guard said the boat was found "under suspicious circumstances" by patrol ships Bhikaji Cama and Rajkamal in Andaman Sea, nine miles east of the Narcondum Island.
On challenge by Coast Guard patrol ships, the boat started fleeing and the crew reportedly started dumping some items into the sea. The boat surrendered after Coast Guard ships fired warning shots and gave a chase.
Coast Guard officers found the boat had no name or registration number written on its hull and was not flying any country's flag. A large quantity of fuel and water was found stored in drums and large number of used clothes of men and women were also found which, the Coast Guard statement said, was unusual for such boats. VHF Communication sets were also found hidden in engine room of the boat.
