Mysuru: The curtains will finally come down on the year-long centennial celebrations of the University of Mysore on Friday. The valedictory address will be delivered by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who will also inaugurate the event.
Speaking to the media on Monday, university vice-chancellor (VC) KS Rangappa announced that the valedictory function would be held at the amphitheatre in Manasagangothri.
Incidentally, the centenary celebrations had been flagged off by President Pranab Mukherjee on July 27, 2015.
Governor Vajubhai Vala, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, chief minister Siddaramaiah, higher education minister Basavraj Rayareddy, minister in-charge of Mysore HC Mahadevappa and UGC chairman Ved Prakash are the other dignitaries who will participate in the ceremony.
Invitations have also been extended to VN Ramaswami, the great-grandson of the university's first vice-chancellor HV Nanjundayya and S Radhakrishnan's grandson Keshava Desairaju. Family members of C Perumal Chetty, who built the iconic Crawford Hall that houses the university's administrative offices, have also been invited. Perumal's youngest son, P Dharamraj Chetty and his eldest son, P Janakiram Chetty, who supervised Crawford Hall's construction will also be in attendance.
Centenary awards
The university has also instituted Bharat Ratna Centenary awards, which will be conferred on three personalities in recognition of their contribution to the fields of science and technology and social sciences.
While Isro chairman Prof AS Kiran Kumar has been chosen for the Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya Centenary award for his innovations in technology, former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi will be bestowed the Dr S Radhakrishnan Centenary award in acknowledgement of his services to social sciences. Honorary director of Centre of Human Genetics Prof HG Sharat Chandra will be conferred the Bharat Ratna Prof CNR Rao award for science. Hamid Ansari will hand over the awards to the recipients. Apart from a citation and gold medal, the award also carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.

VP to unveil Nalwadi's statue
A bronze statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar installed in front of Crawford Hall, will be unveiled by Ansari as a part of the celebrations. The statue, which cost Rs 6.5 lakh, has been sculpted by Varada Prasad Rao from Hyderabad. Books on Nalwadi Wadiyar and Sir M Visvesvaraya will also be released on the occasion.
Two new buildings - School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) and Maulya Bhavan or Evaluation Bhavan - will also be inaugurated by Ansari.
Jaggi Vasudev to deliver centenary lecture
The seventh lecture in the Centenary Lecture series will be delivered by Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi vasudev, who will speak on 'Inner Engineering - A Homecoming' on July 24 at the amphitheatre at 11am. Union finance minister Arun Jaitley and urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu will also be seen in attendance at the function.
