Cricketer-turned-politician Mohammed Kaif who didn’t bat well in the electoral pitch during the Lok Sabha polls at Phulpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh returns as cricketer to lead the Chhattisgarh state team in their Ranji Trophy debut this season.
Kaif was fielded by the Congress Party from the Phulpur seat in 2014 but his popularity didn’t work and he lost the seat the BJP’s Keshav Prasad Maurya.
On Monday, his name was announced by Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh president Baldev Singh Bhatia.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in February this year accorded full membership status to Chhattisgarh making it the 28th affiliated unit to take part in the big league -- the Ranji Trophy.
Kaif felt delighted. “Glad to be appointed Chhatisgarh’s first captain. Exciting new journey, look forward to working with young talents”, he tweeted.
Political analyst Parivesh Mishra cited that the Indian batsman lost Phulpur election apparently owing to lack of support from the party as his political team was in shambles. “But we can hope as Chhattisgarh captain Kaif finds an outstanding team of cricketers here during the upcoming domestic cricket league”, Mishra added.
Kaif has played 13 Tests matches and 125 one-day internationals. He captained the Indian team to victory in the Under-19 World cup in 2000.
