Ten people drowned in rivers or the ocean over the three-day holiday weekend and another victim was unconscious and in critical condition, NHK reported at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, a day when the temperature rose above 30 degrees Celsius in many spots amid fine weather.

In the city of Kochi, a 46-year-old father tried to rescue his fifth-grader son who was carried away by a river. The father was later taken to a hospital and confirmed dead.

Off the coast of Toba, Mie Prefecture, a 76-year-old man who was fishing on a boat fell overboard and drowned. In Motosu, Gifu Prefecture, a 73-year-old man who was angling for sweetfish with his friends was carried away by a river. He was rescued but later died.

Meanwhile in Ino, Kochi Prefecture, a 20-year old university student who was swimming in a river with his friends disappeared. He was found nearby about three hours later but was pronounced dead.
