Cop dies as gun goes off accidentally

MANSA: Head constable Gurdeep Singh (45) of Bareta in the district today died while on duty as his carbine went off accidentally.

Head constable Gurdeep Singh (45) of Bareta in the district today died while on duty as his carbine went off accidentally.

The victim was posted at the Bareta police station and was on “rapport rural” drive of the district police. The police have begun inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC. The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem.

Balwant Singh, SHO, said the victim’s automatic carbine went off after it fell down. A bullet hit him in the chest and he died on the spot, he said. The police have ruled out suicide.
