SPECULATIONS WERE rife that state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury spoke to All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi on Monday during the Monsoon Session of Parliament in New Delhi on the issue of party MLA Manas Bhunia not stepping down from the post of chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC). However, Adhir refused to make any official statement about discussing Bhunia with the party high command.

Sources said Adhir will present a detailed and chronological report of recent events within the state unit to Sonia and her deputy Rahul Gandhi, as well as recommend strong action against Bhunia.

“In the report it will be explained how Bhunia had defied party directive over and over again after he had been instructed to step down from the post of PAC chairman. He will also give the party high command the contents of the text messages and emails that had been exchanged between Chowdhury and Bhunia in this context,” said a senior Congress leader.

Festive offer

“The WBPCC chief (Adhir) would request the AICC leadership to take prompt action because the constant differences in opinion within the party was hampering its reputation,” a senior leader said.

Despite the repeated requests by the state Congress leaders to Bhunia to talk to the party high command instead of the media, the Sabang MLA maintained that neither Sonia nor party vice-president Rahul had called him about this and when they would, he would explain himself.

Talking to The Indian Express, Bhunia alleged that Leader of Opposition Abdul Mannan had been more keen than CPM on giving away the PAC chairman post to the Left party. “I have talked to CPM state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra and he had also clarified in a public rally that they had only wanted participation in different committees and not the PAC chairmanship. However, both Chowdhury and Mannan kept on saying that the CPM had demanded the position. Would they explain why they had been lying and misleading the AICC and other Congress leaders?” Bhunia asked, adding it was “a conspiracy to insult and humiliate me”.
