Gujarat’s Anandiben Patel government on Monday announced a probe by the CID (Crime) into violence against Dalit youth in the Saurashtra region last week.
Eight persons have been arrest following the incident, wherein some miscreants had tied to an SUV and thrashed seven youth from a Dalit community on suspicion of skinning a cow alive.
Four policemen, including an inspector, have been suspended for dereliction of duty. The authorities have also paid ₹1 lakh each to the victims.
Reports suggested that some angry Dalits had threatened to convert to another religion. BSP leader Mayavati had also vociferously raised the issue in Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.
In a statement here, the State Government said a designated court would be set up for a speedy trial, in consultation with the High Court.
It would also nominate a special prosecutor and submit a charge-sheet in 60 days. The government will bear all expenses for the medical treatment of the victims convalescing in hospitals at different hospitals.
The incident The eight Dalit youth had reportedly brought dead cows for skinning at Mota Samadhiyala village near Una town in Gir-Somnath district. While they were skinning the cows, the miscreants accused them of cow slaughter, following which they were subjected to thrashing.
