Two killed in accident

A couple from Tirunelveli was killed in a road accident after the car in which the two were travelling went out of control on the Madurai-Tirunelveli highway near Kalligudi.

Police identified the deceased as retired engineer from Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board C. Arumugam and his wife Jeyalakshmi.

The couple was returning home in Balabagya Nagar in Tirunelveli after visiting Coimbatore.

Arumugam, who was driving the car, lost control of it. The speeding car jumped the median and crossed to the other side of the four-lane highway.

The bodies are kept in Government Hospital in Tirumangalam.

Man held for

sexual assault

A 36-year-old man, M. Anand Kumar, was arrested on charge of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in a place under Silaiman police station limits.

Police said that the accused had taken the girl, who was studying first standard, playing in the neighbourhood, and abused her on Friday evening. When the girl complained of pain the next day, the mother came to know about the crime.

The man was booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
