Hitchhike with a celeb: Maple musings

Architect and interior designer Sonya Suri shares her experience from her recent trip to Canada.

1. Thinking of Canada, the first thing that came to mind was the Niagara Falls. The Hornblower Niagara Cruise experience is breathless, the mist drenched us even with our ponchos. Toronto is so dynamic with its abundant green spaces, waterfront and its CN Tower and the pandas in the zoo. We experienced amazing night life, clubbing and chomping on midnight hotdogs on the streets in Downtown Toronto. El Catrin is a highly recommended place for dinner at a patio.

2. From Toronto, we took a trip down to Kingston, a Canadian city on Lake Ontario. There, we got on a boat cruise to Thousand Islands, it’s a group of over 1,800 islands on the St Lawrence River. It also houses the world’s shortest bridge connecting two countries.

3. Ottawa is the capital of Canada. We visited the Parliament House. Montreal the largest city in Quebec province, is predominantly French speaking. The Olympic stadium view from the Montreal Tower is worth the view. We also included a short visit to the Museum of war history for our son.

4. Quebec City is also recommended. It retains its fortified colonial core. The weather can drop to 0 degrees even during the day so carry woollens.

5. We went further down to Halifax. An Atlantic Ocean port known for its maritime history. There, we went to see Peggy’s Cove, Titanic Graveyard and Lunenburg Waterfront. Downtown Halifax is a good place to shop. The Public Library is a boon for avid readers. I bought souvenirs and you can also buy good maple syrup there.
