Woman dies after car hits scooter on Bhandarkar Rd

Pune: A public sector bank employee succumbed to injuries after a car hit her two-wheeler on Bhandarkar Road on Sunday afternoon.
Arundhati Girish Hasabnis (28), who sustained severe head injuries despite wearing a helmet, was rushed to a nearby private hospital. However, she was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
The Deccan Gymkhana police on late Sunday night arrested Mukund Abhyankar (79), chairman emeritus of Cooperative Bank, under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code apart from relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Inspector Sucheta Khokale of the Deccan Gymkhana police station said Hasabnis was on her way to meet a friend when the car dashed the rear of her vehicle on Bhandarkar road. on Sunday afternoon Arundhati was riding on her way to meet her friend. When she came near the branch of the Bank of Baroda on Bhandarkar Road, Abhyankar's car dashed in the rear of Arundhati's scooter. "The impact was such that the girl fell off her scooter. Although she was wearing a helmet, Hasabnis sustained severe head injuries," Khokale said.
Khokale said that Abhyankar was driving the car, while his wife was sitting next to him. "After the accident, Abhyankar did not stop at the spot. He was later stopped by the local police," the officer stated. As of now, police officials are collating CCTV footage from nearby establishments to confirm details about the accident.
Meanwhile, Abhyankar denied all allegations claiming ignorance. , who was in the Prabhat Road police chowkey, however denied all the allegation against him. Abhyankar said, "I was heading towards Law College Road via Bhandarkar Road. I did not know what had happened," he said.

Abhyankar added that when he reached the spot where the accident had taken place, some people stopped his car and told him about the incident. "I turned back my car and went to the spot. I saw the woman lying on the road. The police took me into the custody and brought me to the police chowky," he stated. Abhyankar said that he did not dash any vehicle by his car. "All allegations against me are false," Abhyankar said.
Kaustubh Tambale, an eyewitness, who rushed Hasabnis to the hospital, said, told TOI that he was checking his cell phone, when he heard a big sound. "I saw a woman riding on a scooter loosing her balance and falling on the road. I even noticed a red coloured car moving away from the spot," he said. Tambale immediately called the police before accompanying Hasabnis to the hospital.
Tambale said that the woman was lying on the road and the blood was oozing out from her head. "I called the police. Meanwhile, the ambulance reached the spot. We rushed the woman to the hospital, where she was declared dead," Tambale said.
Police constable Mohan Malgunde, who was the first policeman to reach the spot said that when he reached the spot, the people had stopped the car driver. "I took him into custody and took him to the Prabhat Road police chowkey," Malgunde said.
Arundhati is survived by husband and two-and-half-year-old son.
