Youth jumps off 2nd floor owing to earthquake caused panic, aftershock also felt

Gandhinagar/Surat: One person was injured in a panic driven jump from the second floor of a building in Palitana town Bhavnagar district today when a medium intensity earthquake hit parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra this morning.

At some places including Kamrej, Rander and Adajan in Surat and Palitana in Bhavnagar people, mostly those living in high rise buildings, rushed out of their homes and offices after feeling the shocks which was for a few seconds. There were no reports of loss of life or property so far.

According to the Institute of Seismological Research, Gandhinagar a 4.7 intensity earthquake was recorded at 0924 hrs this morning with epicenter at 24km North Northwest of Surat. An aftershock of 2.3 intensity was also felt at 1123 am with its center 25 km East SouthEast of Bhavnagar. The impact of the first shock was felt in a diameter of 50 km from the epicenter.

Meanwhile, a person aged around 30 years, who is said to be in the profession of gems and jewelry making, jumped off the second floor of a building in Palitana in panic when the earthquake was felt. He has been admitted to a private hospital here.

The Relief Commissioner has instructed the concerned district collectors to send a report regarding the quake.
