Engineering seats go begging in Kerala

Students can't join the Central Allotment Process after July 15 which means this figure could go up.

KOCHI: The predicament of the self-financing engineering colleges in the state continues with 28 of them not getting any student in one or two branches after the deadline ended on Saturday for taking admission under the second allotment process of the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations for 50 percent seats. The number of seats that remain vacant in government quota after second allotment is 13,900. Students can’t join the Central Allotment Process after July 15 which means this figure could go up.

According to official sources, out of the 24,400 BTech seats, a total of 10,500 students have taken admission in all the colleges under the allotment process. A total of 21 out of 117 colleges could secure students in less than 30 seats overall. In the Thrissur-based Sree Ernakulathappan College of Engineering where allotment was given in 131 seats, only 18 students took admission, erasing controversies that there was fault in the allotment process initiated by the CEE.

Sources said students with no serious intention to pursue engineering studies would have given options to these colleges. The hardest hit branch in the process is the Electronics and Communication (ECE) where the maximum number of seats has fallen vacant.

The colleges that failed to get students in certain branches are (with the name of branch in bracket) Aryanet Institute of Technology, Mundoor, Palakkad (Electrical and Electronics Engineering – EEE), Baselios Thomas I Catholicose College of Engineering, Koothattukulam, Ernakulam (ECE and EEE), Cochin College of Engineering and Technology, Valanchery, Malappuram (ECE), Christ Knowledge City for Women, Airapuram, Ernakulam (ECE), Heera College of Engineering, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram (ECE), Holy Grace Academy of Engineering, Mala (ECE), Hindustan College of Engineering, Kulathupuzha, Kollam (Computer Science and ECE), Indira Gandhi Institute of Engineering & Technology for Women, Kothamangalam (ECE and EEE), Kottayam Institute of Technonolgy & Science, Pallicathode, Kottayam (ECE), KMP College of Engineering, Asamanoor P O, Perumbavoor (ECE and EEE), Met's School of Engineering, Mala, Thrissur (ECE), Ace College of Engineering, Thiruvallam, Thiruvananthapuram (ECE), Malabar Institute of Technology, Kannur (ECE), Muslim Association College of Engineering, Venjaramoodu, Thiruvananthapuram (EEE), Mount Zion College of Engg, Pathanamthitta (ECE), Mount Zion College of Engineering, Chengannur, Alappuzha (Comp Science and ECE), Nirmala College of Engineering, Chalakudy, Thrissur (ECE), Pankaja Kasthuri College of Engineering, Trivandrum (EEE), Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pathanamthitta (EEE), Shahul Hameed Memorial Engineering College, Kadakkal, Kollam (Comp Science and EEE), St. Thomas College of Engineering & Technology, Chengannur (ECE), St. Thomas Institute of Science & Technology, Kazhakoottam, Tvm (ECE and EEE), Toms College of Engineering for Startups, Mattakkara, Kottayam (EEE), Travancore Engineering College, Oyoor, Kollam (ECE and EEE), Sree Vellappally Natesan College of Engineering, Mavelikkara (ECE), Younus College of Engineering & Technology, Vadakkevila Kollam (IT), Younus Institute of Technology, Kannanaloor, Nedumpana P O, Kollam (EEE), Younus College of Engineering, Thalachira P O, Kottarakkara, Kollam. – (EEE).
