Aiden Anderson, 11, and his sister, Ella Anderson, 13, have teamed up to raise funds for the play deck at the Children’s Hospital-HSC Winnipeg.

Saturday marked their fifth annual lemonade and muffin sale in support of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.

“I’ve experienced being on the play deck and it’s a nice feature to the hospital because you can actually go outside when you’re in the hospital,” said Aiden who was diagnosed with primary ciliary dyskinesia, a disorder characterized by chronic respiratory tract infections and abnormally positioned internal organs.

The idea started when Ella told her mother she wanted to run a lemonade stand. Tammy Anderson, Ella’s mother, agreed to the idea under the condition that Ella choose a charity to raise funds for.

Because of her little brother’s condition, Ella chose the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and the event took off from there, growing over the years.

“As the years went on, a whole bunch of friends started to pitch in, bringing baking, and then two years ago an ice cream company donated 30 ice creams to help contribute to that and then it’s just grown even more,” said Ella.

The event took place at the children’s home at the south end of Cathcart Street in Charleswood.

Lemonade and a muffin sold for $0.25, but the kids said donations were gratefully accepted.

Along with the bake sale, ice cream from Cornell Crème was also sold and Dr. Goodbear dropped by for a visit too.

“It makes me feel amazing inside that I can give back to my hospital,” said Aiden.

The duo has fundraised $4,000 at the stand and online this year.

The event was scheduled until 3 p.m. Saturday, but crowds of people kept the stand from closing.
