Women happy under Muslim personal law: Dr Asma Zehra

She told reporters here on Saturday that that 97 per cent of marriages in Muslim community were a success.

KOZHIKODE: Dr. Asma Zehra, member, All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), has claimed that all Muslim women are happy and contented under the Muslim personal law. She told reporters here on Saturday that that 97 per cent of marriages in Muslim community were a success.

“The media is unleashing a false campaign on the triple talaq issue. Though divorce is painful, there is ample provision in Islam for it. Divorce is prevalent in other communities also,” she said and added that the central government’s move to impose uniform civil code (UCC) cannot be accepted. Personal law should be protected and the move to enforce UCC will be resisted. “Different communities and castes co-exist in the country according to their beliefs and customs. Muslims are being victimised in the name of UCC,” she alleged.

To a query she said that Muslim men who misuse talaq should be educated. Instead of focusing on the major women-centric issues such as female foeticide, child marriage, dowry, illiteracy etc, the tendency was to create a propaganda on talaq, Zehra felt. Regarding polygamy, she said that Islam allows it only after ensuring justice and equality. “There are well- formulated laws for marriage and divorce of Muslim women. They are strictly being implemented and there is no need to amend them,” Dr Asma Zehra clarified.
