Britney Spears’ New Single Is Midtempo Britney Instead of Dancey Britney, but It’s Still Britney

Since the release of her most recent album Britney Jean, Britney Spears has proven willing to maintain a consistent public presence—not to mention a certain degree of controversy—over the last few years, between her bizarre celebrity dust-ups, fun TV cameos, and collaborations with musical pioneers. Now, four months after announcing the beginning stages of a new studio album, Spears has given fans a taste of what’s to come with the release of her new single “Make Me.”

The song is a sample of what will be Spears’ ninth solo album over a professional singing career of nearly 20 years. It features rapper G-Eazy for a guest verse—which complements Spears’ sound with seductive ease—and has swiftly moved to the top of the iTunes chart. While “Make Me” does not necessarily feature Spears at her energetic, fast-paced best, it does represent a return to form in its rhythm and in the singer’s sultry vocal command.
