NGT wants electric crematoriums in Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Gwalior, Rewa and Satna
BHOPAL: National green tribunal, central bench on Friday, ordered Madhya Pradesh government to encourage the use of electronic crematorium and establishment of electronic crematorium in a major town of the city such as Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Gwalior, Rewa and Satna. They have been asked to file the progress report in this regard on the next date of hearing on August 23.
The orders were given during the ongoing hearing in the case of Pramod Chugh, who has filed the petition in regard to harm to green cover across city and state, due to usage of woods in traditional way of cremation.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation, during the hearing presented the proposal for lands in Chhola and Bhadbada, for introducing the electronic crematorium. Proposals for establishing the electronic crematorium one at Chhola and other at Bhadbhada have already been sent to the State Government. However, so far no sanctions have been received regarding this so far. The Department of Urban Development and Finance need to respond on the aforesaid, state BMC.
“We would only emphasise that establishment of such electronic crematorium would go a long way in protecting the already depleted green cover and also at the same time improve the Air Ambience Quality as burning of woods for the purpose of cremation cause air pollution in the neighbourhood,” state NGT in its order.
On the other hand, along with establishing the electronic crematoriums in other districts, NGT ordered Madhya Pradesh Pollution control board, to submit the report of air ambience quality in and around the vicinity of the crematoriums at Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior.
To be mentioned here, an electronic crematorium at Subhash nagar is already there but is hardly functional. During Simhastha State government was asked to carry out the awareness program regarding use of electronic crematorium to save the green cover and environment, as this is a fact more related to religious and traditional feeling of people.
