Civic body polls peaceful in MP
BHOPAL: Three towns in Madhya Pradesh – Mandideep, Isagarh and Maihar -- went to EVM machines on Friday to elect representatives of local civic bodies. Election Commission (EC) office said polls were totally peaceful with no reports of any violence or untoward incidents. Isagarh in Ashokenagar district recorded the highest 88.31% voting to elect members for its Nagar Parishad (town council).
Maihar, in Satna district polled 75.06% and turn-out in Mandideep in Raisen was 67.43%.
Maihar and Mandideep voted to elect councillors for its Nagarpalika Parishad (municipal council). Counting will be on Monday.
There are total seven candidates contesting for the chairman’s position in Isagarh town council. But the main contest is between Harivallabh Agarwal of the BJP and Mahendra Dubey of the Congress party. Contest is tough in Maihar where in February this year, the assembly constituency went for a bypoll after Congress legislator Narayan Tripathi switched allegiance to the BJP. In Maihar, there are 20 candidates running for post of chairman of the municipal council. But here too the main electoral fight is between Dheeraj Pandey of the BJP and Dharmesh Ghai of the Congress. Mandideep has nine candidates contesting for municipal council chairman’s seat while the fight is centred around Rajendra Agarwal of the BJP and Badri Chouhan of the Congress.
