Developed for the BMW i eco-friendly cars, BMW eDrive technology is now available in the flagship of the Bavarian automaker’s range. Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for the 2017 BMW 740e iPerformance. As well as the BMW 740Le iPerformance. And the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance.
Let’s start with the obvious. There are three versions of the BMW 7 Series plug-in hybrid to choose from. One is rear-wheel-drive and it comes with the standard wheelbase, the second is rear-wheel-drive with a long wheelbase, and the third is all-wheel-drive with a long wheelbase. All three models have their charge port located on the left-hand side front fender and have the 83 kW (113 PS or 111 hp) electric motor integrated into the eight-speed tranny.

On the internal combustion side of things, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine develops 190 kW (258 PS or 255 hp). This brings the total plug-in hybrid system output to a nice 240 kW (326 PS or 322 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). As for the battery, the 740e is equipped with a high-voltage lithium-ion unit with a gross capacity rated at 9.2 kWh and a net capacity of 7.4 kWh.

Located underneath the rear seat bench, the battery doesn’t eat too much of the trunk space. And so, the 740e iPerformance offers 420 liters (14.83 cuFT) of cargo volume. Depending on the configuration, the 2017 BMW 740e iPerformance can deliver anything between 25 miles (41 kilometers) and 30 miles (48 kilometers) according to the European test cycle for PHEVs.

If frugality isn’t your thing, then you’ll be glad to hear that the 740Le xDrive iPerformance can sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.3 seconds. Its RWD siblings do it one-two tenths of a second slower. In EV mode, all three variants can remain so at speeds of up to 87 mph (140 km/h).

When it goes on sale in the United States of America, the 2017 BMW 740e iPerformance will start from $90,095. In its domestic market of Germany, on the other hand, the full-size plug-in hybrid luxury sedan starts from €91,900.

The biggest and most direct competitor of the BMW 740e iPerformance in this segment the Mercedes-Benz S550e Plug-in Hybrid, which autoevolution had tested in European spec when it was called the S500 Plug-in Hybrid.
