Dainty coffee shops, streets lined up with boutique galleries and friendly locals living the 'real' slow-life. Chiang Mai has always enjoyed a certain cool vibe, one that Bangkok seems to envy and will never replicate.

The creative scene is no different. While local crafts and traditional arts are still widely practiced and preserved, this Northern city also embraces the contemporary movement with open arms. An exciting time to be then, as just two weeks ago MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum unveiled its curtains to the public with a stunning inauguration show "Apichatpong Weerasethakul: The Serenity of Madness".

Cinematic and provocative, Weerasethakul's exhibition is comprised of 20 visual artworks by the Chiang Mai-based artist and film maker, in which he explores the themes of time, space, reality and fantasy via various media ranging from 16mm film, digital video, video installation and photography to print.

Guru brings you a visual report of the exhibition and other collections that are currently on display at the museum.

MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum is open daily between 10am-6pm (closed Tuesdays) and is located at 122 Moo 7 Tonpao, Sankampheang, Chiang Mai. Entrance fee is B150 for adults, B100 for students and free for children under 12 years of age. g
