Young doctor found dead at Byculla railway hospital
Mitesh Delat, 25, was found hanged in his room, 2 hours after he assisted in a surgery.

A young doctor serving at the Byculla railway hospital was found hanged in his room there on Thursday afternoon, nearly two hours after he assisted a senior in a surgery.

The police believe it’s a case of suicide, but no note has been found in Mitesh Valaji Delat’s room on the fourth floor of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Railway Hospital.

The 25-year-old orthopaedic surgeon, from Surat, had joined the facility only three months ago and had enrolled in the Diplomate of National Board programme.

He had given no indications that he was under any sort of stress, and his family, friends and colleagues were left grappling for answers on Thursday. Roommate Harikiran told Mirror that Delat appeared perfectly normal in the morning and they even discussed their work schedule for the day.

Delat was rostered for two surgeries. The first one ended around 2.50 pm, following which he retired to his room. He told his seniors that for personal reasons, he would not be available for the second operation.

A hospital cleaner has told the Byculla police that around 3.30 pm, she saw Delat talking on the phone. He appeared upset. Around 4.40 pm, Delat’s brother rang up his colleague and asked why Delat was not answering any calls.

The colleague then went to check on Delat, but his room was locked from inside. After several knocks on the door, he peaked inside and saw Delat hanging from the ceiling fan.

“We have not found any suicide note yet. We checked his phone, but there were no messages that stood out. His family members have left from Surat and we will get an idea about his frame of mind only when we interview them,” said senior police inspector Avinash Shingte of the Byculla police station.

Another officer said Delat told his seniors before the second surgery on Thursday that he would have to urgently leave for Surat. He did not say why.

“He was an easy-going type of person. We never saw him get very upset. We are all shaken by his death,” Harikiran said. “It’s difficult to believe what has happened. Just in the morning, he spoke to me about his schedule and he seemed fine.”
