'We have looked at renting, but prices are astronomical'

The Fingal region is Ireland's fastest growing area, rising by 8.1pc according to Census 2016.

The figures show that household sizes are increasing - which is a reflection on the number of adults who are remaining on in the family home, often two or three generations.

Sarah, who works in IT, has never lived away from home. She is working full-time to save up for a deposit on an apartment.

Her sister also recently moved home from Australia and is living back in the family home as well.

"The more we've looked into the rental situation, especially in Malahide, the prices are astronomical," Sarah says.

She and her partner of eight years have never earned enough to rent, and are focusing their efforts on saving money to purchase their own place.

Her situation is not unusual. While some have emigrated, those that are left behind would all live at home, she says.

It's easy to see why the population of the area has increased, Sarah believes. "There are a few newer estates that are more affordable that might encourage people to come here," she said. "We've got a great nightlife, bars, restaurants; it's good for young people. I think it's starting to attract younger professionals."

But she believes that she will have to stay at home for a good while to save up enough money to make a start on their lives as independent adults.
