Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is the first preference of Telugus, but IIT Madras is where majority of them land up followed by IIT Kharagupur.

Statistics obtained after the final phase of allotments in IITs and NITs this year reveal that 1,186 candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana gave their first preference as IIT Bombay but only 100 students could finally get into it, considered to be sought-after for computer science engineering.

Among the 5,131 candidates from the two Telugu States, who got seat securing ranks, 303 got into IIT Madras followed by IIT Kharagpur (253) and IIT Hyderabad (148). Other IITs where majority Telugus were admitted are IIT Bhubaneswar (110), IIT Bombay (100), IIT Guhawati (99), ISM Dhanbad (97), BHU Varanasi (77), IIT Roorkee (67), IIT Tirupati (64) and IIT Delhi (53), according to K.V. Krishna, Organising Chairman of JEE Advanced this year. He is a professor of Mathematics in IIT Guwahati.

In fact, IIT Bombay, Madras and Kharagpur have also been the top preference of the Telugu States rankers figuring in the top 1,000 ranks of JEE. From AP and TS 29 students got into CSE in IIT Bombay, 22 into CSE at IIT Madras, 18 into Electronics and Electrical Engineering (EEE) of IIT Kharagpur, 17 into CSE of IIT Kharagpur, 16 into Electrical Engineering in IIT Madras, 13 into CSE of IIT Delhi, 10 into Computer Science and Engineering, the five-year dual degree course of IIT Kharagpur, 9 into CSE course in IIT Hyderabad, 8 each into IIT Guwahati and IIT Madras for CSE and Mechanical Engineering courses respectively.

IIT Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh could attract only 9 Telugu students and it was not a major surprise given that it is a new institution and students didn’t want to take chances and opted for better ones. On the other hand IIT Hyderabad, which is considered the best among the new IITs, is being increasingly opted by Telugu students. This year third highest population of Telugu students will be in this institution. The reason is not just proximity of the institution but also the name it has earned over the recent years for quality. Moreover, the institution has now almost shifted to the new premises in Kandi on the city’s outskirts. The IIT Hyderabad Director U.B. Desai says that some of the top students are choosing IIT Hyderabad and not just Telugu students.

Among the NITs the first preference obviously has been NIT Warangal where 292 students took admission followed by NIT Calicut (137) and NIT Tiruchurapalli (123). Statistics reveal that 931 students from Telangana, 822 from Andhra Pradesh were allotted seats in IITs this year.
