New models push Brunei car sales up 5.5 pct in June

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Car sales in Brunei increased by 5.5 percent in June from the previous year as the introduction of new vehicle models gave the industry a slight boost.

According to the latest statistics quoted by local media Thursday from the Brunei Automobile Traders Association (BATA), 1,407 passenger and commercial units were sold in June which is up by 73 units from last year.

On a month-on-month basis, sales rose by 25 percent from 1,125 units in May.

While The total sales for cars as of June were 6,388 units, which is down by about 19 percent from 7,884 at the same time in 2015.

An industry insider said the introduction of new models from some dealers contributed to the sales increase last month.

"Some of the new sport utility vehicles (SUVs) have proven to be attractive to customers in terms of design and price point," said the insider who wished to speak on anonymity.

Vehicles in the 1,301-1,500cc category continued to top sales figures with 384 units sold followed by 181 units for cars in the 1,001-1,300cc category.
