The department of higher education has served a showcause notice to the principal of Jai Hind College, Churchgate, after the student wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNVS) accused the management of charging capitation fee.
According to the MNVS, the college management was charging an annual fee of Rs 1,000 from students for providing of WiFi facility. It alleged that this fee was over and above the fee approved by the University of Mumbai.
However, principal Ashok Wadia said the management had voluntarily decided to provide WiFi facility to the students after a discussion with the student council.

He said the management had invested in setting up the WiFi service and hence the students were charged Rs80 a month for WiFi. “The WiFi fee cannot be compared to capitation fee as the management had no intentions of making money from the service,” he said.
The college had first installed routers only in one building on trial-basis two years ago and later the entire campus was WiFi enabled.
