Yamunanagar, July 14

Heavy rains lashed Yamunanagar today throwing normal life out of gear. The city received 383 mm rain in five hours this morning causing water logging in several colonies, affecting vehicular movement and disrupting power supply.

Rain water was drained out from the deputy commissioner’s residence with the help of fire tenders and pumping sets. Several colonies, including Professor colony, Lajpat Nagar, Azadnagar, Chitta Mandir area, Bhagirath colony, Madhuban colony and Camp area were flooded with water.

Overflowing nullahs blocked traffic on NH-73 near Kamani chowk, and Kanhaiya Sahib-Madhu chowk road near Govindpuri. Trees were uprooted at several places disrupting traffic.

Several schools were flooded with rain water. Parents and their wards waded through knee-deep water to reach their destination. Villagers rescued 30 to 35 students from a private school bus that got stuck in the water current in Raipur Damoli village.

State Assembly Speaker, Kanwar Pal Gurjar, Deputy Commissioner Dr SS Phulia, Jagadhri SDM Prem Chand, DDPO Gagandeep Singh and several other officers took stock of the situation.

Water logging took place in several villages, including Milak Khas, Mehmoodpur, Leda Khas, Barauli Majra and Tugalpur villages.

The water level in Yamuna reached 38,991 cusecs at 2 pm today.

Meanwhile, Ravinder Kumar (20) was electrocuted to death in Patri Mohalla of Jagadhri.
