Mauro Tassotti hopes that Silvio Berlusconi will not follow his example by leaving AC Milan this summer.
Tassotti ended a 36-year allegiance with the Rossoneri on Wednesday, when he accepted the role as Andriy Shevchenko's assistant coach with Ukraine.
After a year spent overseeing Milan's many players out on loan at other clubs, he admitted that he has missed the day-to-day coaching work and could therefore not turn down Shevchenko's offer.
However, with Berlusconi currently considering offers to sell the Serie A club, Tassotti has advised him not to give up on the club he has owned for three decades.
"I don't think you can have a better president [than Berlusconi], I like him a lot," Tassotti told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Having said that, everybody is getting older and it's inevitable that you reach a point where certain decisions need to be made.
"But in my heart, I dearly hope that he doesn't give up and that he remains in his position."
Tassotti worked as Milan's assistant coach to Carlo Ancelotti, Leonardo, Massimiliano Allegri, Clarence Seedorf and Filippo Inzaghi before being told last summer that Sinisa Mihajlovic did not want him as part of his coaching staff.
The Rossoneri found him a new role, but he admitted it did not pan out the way he had hoped.
"When I accepted a year ago, it seemed like a good opportunity for me to gain more professional experience," Tassotti said. "In reality, I was involved far less than I expected.
"I was too nostalgic about being on the training field and it was inevitable that it would end this way.
"I wanted to and still want to coach. Well, the only other option was to stay at home and do nothing, so I accepted.
"To start with, I was pleased to take a step back from the field, but then I realised that the work I was doing was too detached from the dynamics I have been used to."
