car carrying four passengers from the same family crashed into a ravine in the compound of the Ceta Temple tourist attraction in Karanganyar, Central Java, killing two of the family members.
The fatalities were sisters Feranita Decca Williawaty, 32, and Silvia, 25. The two survivors, Feranita’s husband Joko Wardoyo, 33, and their 5-year-old son Rajendra, were in critical condition. The family was from Mantingan, Sukoharjo.
Witnesses said the accident occurred when the Daihatsu Ayla that the family was riding in was following a motorcycle while climbing a steep hill. All of a sudden the motorcycle stopped because of engine failure, which forced the car to stop as well.
When the motorcycle could finally move forward, the car could not. It instead rolled backward at speed and crashed into a ravine some 25 meters deep. “We tried to help stop the car but it moved too fast. We could do nothing,” said Sularno of Jenawi, who was at the site when the accident occurred.
Chief of Karanganyar Police’s traffic unit Adj. Comr. Suryo Wibowo said the driver tried to use the brakes and the handbrake. The car rolled backward for about 30 meters before finally falling into the ravine. The roads heading to Ceta Temple all climb steep hills.
