Myanmar to take action against rule-breaking fishing during closed season

Myanmar authorities will take action starting this month against rule-breaking fishing vessels in the country's territorial waters during the fishing moratorium season, according to the Department of fisheries Thursday.

Fishing activities have been limited during the country's fishing closed season (May-August) for protecting fishery resources since the fiscal year 2010-2011. As fishes reproduce in this season, fishing under special case can only be made, the authorities said.

The closed-season limited fishing areas are prescribed as Taninthayi, Ayayawaddy , Yangon, Rakhine and Mon regions or states.

Myanmar's fishery export reached 502.8 million U.S. dollars in the fiscal year 2015-2016 and targeted to earn 700 million dollars from the export through normal and border trade in 2016-2017.

However, the country's fishery sector needs the government's subsidies to boost both production and extend the market, said Myanmar Fishery Federation (MFF). Enditem
