MACCABI Hakoah Junior Football Club’s under-11 girls team won the Kanga Cup in Canberra last week when they defeated the Gladesville Sharks 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

Maccabi held the majority of possession and had plenty of chances, but could not capitalise in the grand final.

The game went into extra time and again ended goalless, which led to a thrilling sudden death penalty shoot-out.

The win by the girls, who were coached by Daniel Castello, in the largest youth football competition in the southern hemisphere is a tribute to their tenacity and determination since they first played together five years ago at Christison Park in Vaucluse.

The team has already set its sights on playing together at the 2021 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Two other Maccabi teams also competed at the Kanga Cup in Canberra.

The under-15 boys team, led by captain Dylan Herdan and coached by Michael Synott, began the tournament with a convincing 4-2 win over Marist FC but then lost to Southern Tablelands FA 1-0.

The team played well to make the quarterfinals, but was then defeated by Harrington United Football Club and bowed out of the tournament.

The under-12 boys team had a tight 3-2 loss to Harbord Seaside United and then had a thrilling 3-2 win over Woden Valley Lightening.

The team didn’t progress through the group stage because it lost to Glenmore Park FC, but the team was very competitive.
