NEW DELHI: Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) has acquired 32 new buses and another 30 are expected to join its fleet by the end of July. However, sources said none of the buses are likely to hit the road before August.

“A hundred non-AC buses will be added to the fleet by August. And another hundred are scheduled to be added in September. The AC buses will be inducted into the fleet only from the end of October,” said a senior government official.

Around 418 non-AC buses are expected to be added to the cluster fleet by October-end and 431 AC buses by the year-end, the official said.

The new buses will be added to clusters 6 and 7. “These clusters operate in east and central Delhi,” said the official. These buses mostly go to areas like Mori Gate, Seelampur, Jagatpuri, Kalyanpuri, Mayur Vihar, Anand Vihar, GT Road, Nand Nagri, Burari, Mukandpur, Badli and Shahbad Dairy. The depots for these clusters are at Dilshad Garden and Rajghat.

The new buses are being sourced from Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland. “The registration process is over and issuance of road permits are in progress,” the government source said.

The numbers will be a shot in the arm for the Delhi government, which has been struggling to add buses to its fleet.

The tender for 1,000 buses in the DTC fleet is yet to be approved by the cabinet, while the premium bus scheme of the AAP government has been rejected by the LG, and is now hanging fire. The new buses have extra features, said the official. For instance, they are fitted with anti-vandalism seats, which are being touted to be “more comfortable”. They are also fitted with on-board GPS and electronic ticketing machines.
