Destination: Wedding

IT’S finally happening— Bombay boy Arun Nayar will soon be married to his girlfriend of four years, Kim Johnson. Johnson, a British model, has announced that she will be a missus in three weeks from now. The couple have been engaged for a year, while Nayar was famously married to British actor Elizabeth Hurley and Italian socialite Valentina Pedroni before this. Incidentally, he met and started dating Hurley while he was still married to Pedroni, and dated Johnson while he was still married to Hurley (albeit his friends say they were long separated). The Nayar-Johnson wedding takes place in Antibes, on the Côte d’Azur in France. Among his Mumbai guests are his brother Nikki and his wife Samantha Nayar, Mathew Spacie, Lisa Haydon and her boyfriend Dino Lalvani (Lalvani and Nayar hang out often in London), and old pals Ness and Jeh Wadia, along with Jeh’s wife Celina.

The prodigious turns prodigal

THE should-have-been superstar is having a rather rough time—both in his personal and professional life. Several of his films have not tasted the success that was divined for them, while others have been delayed. In fact, he’s suddenly found himself with six months of nothing to do. The luckless actor seems really down and out, and disinterested in his work. Rumour has it he has turned to mood-enhancers to allay his apathy. Harmless non-addictives are quite the norm du jour, but we hear he’s even hooked on the more harmful stuff. His provider is a famous restaurateur, well known for his sandwich eateries. The actor — ill-fated even though staggeringly talented — apparently phones his friend in the wee hours for his fix. In the days, he’s dazed. None of his meetings with directors have been productive, and he’s alienated almost everyone—other than his one director buddy. We do hope better sense and a professional attitude prevails. If there’s one thing the film industry teaches you: some days you’re the pigeon, other days the statue.

Coloured pink

THE beloved city of Jaipur was dressed in its characteristic pink finery to celebrate the 18th birthday of its maharaja. Padmanabh Singh, Jaipur’s titular maharaja and son of the beauteous Diya Kumari, was heralded with celebrations and rituals at the historic palace. Padmanabh took to the throne as a teenager in 2011, when his maternal grandfather Brigadier Sawai Bhawani Singh died. Bhawani Singh had adopted Padmanabh as heir to the Kachwaha Rajput dynasty’s throne in 2002. The day-long celebrations saw the titular king being welcomed at Chandra Mahal, before he performed his traditional charities. Then he visited the family temple outside Jaipur. Padmanabh is fondly called Pacho by his friends, and is a budding polo player. He is currently studying in England.

Missus says so

IT remains one of the greatest mysteries of film lore. Sunjay Dutt and Salman Khan—one time best buds—are friends no more. Khan has not visited or spoken with Dutt for years. Meanwhile, on his release, Dutt was asked by a reporter when he would patch up with Khan, to which he evasively replied, “Let me patch myself up first”. Now we hear Manyata, Dutt’s wife, is very keen on bringing the two together. Along with some of their common friends, she is working on an olive branch. We did reach out to their spokesperson who did not wish to confirm anything for now. But stranger things have happened.

Tailpiece

DEBUTANTE author and Kolkata girl Gunjan Jain could not have dreamed of a bigger launch than this for her first book. At a plush Colaba five-star hotel next week, the likes of Adi Godrej, Deepak Parekh and Ajay Piramal are hosting and moderating a panel that will discuss women’s and men’s attitudes in the workplace. The book, titled ‘She Walks, She Leads’, is a collection of profiles of women at the acme of their careers – usual suspects like Indra Nooyi, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Naina Lal Kidwai, Chanda Kochhar, Zia Mody, Kareena Kapoor, and a few new names like Parmeshwar Godrej and Yasmeen Premji.
