Pro-choice group NARAL was hammered on social media after releasing a comedy sketch about getting an abortion.
Riffing on Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” the skit shows two comedians, Alice Wetterlund and Nato Green, driving to various clinics to get an abortion.
On the way to the first clinic, the comedians spot a crying child. “Yeah, we don’t need more of those in the world, that’s the other thing,” Ms. Wetterlund says.
Social media users were quick to ridicule the sketch.
“This was profoundly unfunny,” Kyle Franklin commented. “Almost as though the writers had decided to make this after someone had vaguely described the idea of humor to them during a board meeting.”
“Where are the comedians?” chimed in Andrew Naquin.
“‘Also, ‘look at that kid … we don’t need more of those in the world.’ Really? Did you really just say that?” Jonathan Ahlgren said.
The first abortion clinic the comedians try to go to is closed. The second facility is run by a zany Christian, who tells the comedians that, “if you get an abortion, there’s an 18 percent chance that the chance of you getting into heaven is zero percent.”
The comedians then run into a conspiracy theorist, who tells them abortion is part of a governmental plot to “get the chip inside their head,” before smearing ice cream on his face.
Ms. Wetterlund finally arrives at a clinic willing to perform an abortion, only to find out that a waiting period and other regulations will prevent the procedure from taking place immediately.
“If you want an abortion, the easiest way is probably just to go to a place where it’s legal, like Canada or Uruguay,” the abortionist says. “Or you could sail out to international waters.”
The United States is one of seven nations — along with North Korea, China and Vietnam — to allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of fertilization.
