Donald S. Myers, 32, was shot and killed by a Flagstaff police officer on July 13, 2016. Myers is seen here in a prior mugshot from Arizona Department of Corrections.

A Flagstaff police officer shot and killed a man who was fleeing with a gun in a residential area on Wednesday morning, according to a Flagstaff Police Department statement.

Officers initially responded to a call near Historic Route 66 and Switzer Canyon Drive, about a mile east of downtown Flagstaff, where they found a man with an outstanding arrest warrant, police said. The man was seen with a gun and fled from officers, police said.

Officers were pursuing him and attempting to take him into custody when an officer shot and killed him, police reported. Flagstaff police identified the man as 32-year-old Donald S. Myers.

Police have not released the name of the officer involved.

Myers, who lived in Flagstaff, had a criminal background; he was found guilty on solicitation and burglary charges in 2001 and again found guilty on a burglary charge in 2002, according to court records.

Police are reviewing footage from the officers' body cameras, and the investigation is ongoing.
