Subway traffic is still crawling for the evening rush hour after an afternoon power outage at the MTA’s main rail control center causing delays on all lines.
Power went out, affecting signals at the main control center in Manhattan, just after 1 p.m. The lack of electricity meant that local power centers and backup rail control stations on individual lines needed to pick up the slack, said MTA spokesman Chris McKniff.
The rail control center directly controls all of the numbered subways lines, so the delays on those were most severe. But all lines were affected by ripple-effect delays, said officials.
Workers got the control center up and running just before 4 pm, but residual delays are still happening. To help ease traffic, Uber is offering $5 UberPool rides all across the city for the evening.
