Man charged with 'supplying' numerous waiters with illegal card machines

The alleged supplier of illegal point of sale devices‚ who appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court this week‚ is suspected to have supplied numerous waiters and waitresses in the Western Cape with these devices. According to Hawks spokesman‚ Captain Lloyd Ramovha‚ 29-year-old Liberty Tsambirwa has been charged with fraud after 18 cloned cards‚ two laptops as well as memory sticks were found in his possession.Tsambirwa’s arrest followed that of 39-year-old Makanyra Manyika‚ a Stellenbosch waitress who was found to have an illegal device in her possession.“The duo were arrested during the weekend after the Hawks' ATM task team followed up on information and apprehended Manyika at a local restaurant where she is employed as a waiter.“She was allegedly found in possession of an illegal point of sale device.“Subsequent preliminary investigations led the members to a residential address of Tsambirwa who is the alleged supplier of the devices‚” Ramovha said.Ramovha added that it is suspected that Tsambirwa had been allegedly supplying the illegal devices to restaurant workers across the Western Cape.“The pair are expected to appear at the same court next Monday (July 18) for a bail information hearing.”“While their situations are different‚ in that one of them was an alleged supplier of these devices‚ they are both being charged with the contravention of Electronic Communications and Transactions Act‚” Ramovha told TMG Digital on Wednesday.Earlier this month TMG Digital reported that Gauteng is the province where most of the illegal electronic bank card and ATM skimming devices - used to defraud consumers - are being seized by police and banking security officials.Kalyani Pillay‚ CEO of the South African Banking Risk Information Centre‚ said that card skimming is a global problem‚ and “unfortunately the greatest vulnerability lies with the individual”.Authorities seized 35 hand-held card skimming devices in 2015 and 13 in the first quarter of 2016 across all provinces. In addition‚ 54 high-tech ATM card skimming devices were seized in 2015‚ and eight more in the first quarter of 2016‚ she said...
