It is learnt that senior Army officers, including the Western Army Commander, Lt Gen KJ Singh, GOC of Yol-based 9 Corps and the GOC of Jammu-based 26 Division took stock of the situation and were briefed by senior Army officers on the ground. However, no further leads have been received by the security forces in the area after the initial sighting even as the alert continues. A senior officer told The Indian Express that residents of nearby villages have also been alerted and asked to be vigilant in order to spot any outsider or any suspicious activity.

Following the intelligence alert over the possibility of a terror strike taking place with the help of sub-conventional methods like paragliding, para-sailing and parachutes or with remote controlled devices, the district Administration in Jammu had imposed restriction on such activity in June.

A blanket ban had been imposed on all such activities within a radius of one km from any defence/security forces installation in Jammu for a period of 60 days. The ban order had said that “it has become imperative to impose restrictions on agencies involved in adventure sports like parasailing, paragliding, or other similar airborne objects’’ and that terrorists may use “sub-conventional methods’’ like “paragliding, parachute etc., to target IAF/Defence/Police installations in near future’’.

The alert had also had its effect on the nearby airbase of Pathankot which had come under a terrorist attack in January this year. The officials of the Pathankot air base deputed teams to go around surrounding villages and residential areas bordering the air base in order to sensitise the residents about the objects which may appear suspicious. Photographs of hang gliders, powered para gliders, and remote-controlled aeromodels were shown to he residents so that they could identify the objects if they spotted them.
