NHRC seeks report on tribal's murder
Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Kalahandi superintendent of police to file a report within four weeks on action taken in the murder of a tribal man in the district on May 25.
The commission issued the direction after hearing the plea of petitioner Sangita Swain, who alleged that the tribal man lost his life due to police inaction.
Swain said the deceased, 50-year old Dayanidhi Majhi of Sanachergaon village was allegedly beaten to death by the kidnappers of his minor daughter.
After the girl was found missing, Majhi and his nephew attempted to trace the 14-year old girl. On May 23, the duo confronted the abductors, who beat Majhi to death. He was rushed to the Bhawanipatna government hospital and was later shifted to a hospital in Bissamcuttack in Rayagada for further treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on May 25.
The TOI reported on the incident on June 26, following which the petitioner had urged the commission to take criminal action against police officials for their failure in taking lawful action in the case. She also demanded Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the kin of the deceased.
Swain added that Majhi had lodged a missing report with Kegaon police. Later he informed the police about the abduction, but police allegedly didn't take action against the abductors.
