Bhubaneswar: Khandagiri police here on Tuesday arrested two persons, including a minor, on charges of raping and killing a 16-year-old girl last week. Police said the minor accused was in love with her and masterminded the murder after she insisted him to marry her.
Though the girl belonged to Khandagiri, her body was found in Kumuda forest under Ghasipura police limits in Keonjhar district on July 9.
Her family said the accused kidnapped her on July 6 and lodged a complaint the same day.
"Based on the complaint, we had registered a case on July 9. Same day, the Keonjhar police informed us about recovery of the girl's body from the forest," DCP Satyabrata Bhoi told mediapersons.
Police pointed the needle of suspicion at the minor boy after receiving tips from the girl's parents. During interrogation, he confessed to the killing. He took the help of his cousin Umakanta Das, 40, to eliminate her, Bhoi said.
Police said the minor along with Das took the girl to Keonjhar on the pretext of marrying her on July 6. They stayed in a lodge at Ghatagaon. Both of them raped her in the lodge after spiking her soft drink. Since the girl was semi-conscious, they lied to the hotelier about her illness and took her to the nearby forest. They strangled her and smashed her head with a rock, another police officer said.
