It's an ordeal to find addresses in city
Allahabad: Explaining the location of a place in the city is a problem people grapple with on a daily basis, considering a lot of roads haven't even been named.
The problem is not pronounced in the old parts of the city but is grave in the developing areas where most of the roads have remained unnamed for the past several years.
Though the responsibility of christening of roads rests with the Allahabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), it has not efforts in that direction.
There is, in fact, even a nomenclature committee of corporators in the AMC entrusted with the task of identifying and naming of the roads. The areas of the city where most of the roads are not named include Allahpur, Salori, Kareli, Ghausnagar, Phaphamau, Teliarganj, Mumfordganj, Govindpur, and Teliarganj.
Take the case of Kareli. This locality was developed about 30 years ago but many of the roads are unnamed. People have to use landmarks like markets, hospitals, banks and even grocery stores to explain addresses. In fact, for want of named roads, people prefer mentioning these landmarks, like Askari Market and Pahalwan Chowraha.
Member of nomenclature committee Shiv Sewak Singh said, "There is a well-defined policy regarding christening of roads, crossings and parks in the city which was prepared in 2002. But it is seldom adhered to." According to the policy, application regarding christening of roads or parks is made before the AMC. The map and workshop department of AMC identifies and makes enquiries regarding the person a road, crossing or park is being named after. Further, it has to be ensured that there is only one road or statue named after that person. After the enquiry, the proposal should be presented before the nomenclature committee. The proposal would then be presented before the sadan.
