Governor of Punjab and Haryana Kaptan Singh Solanki inaugurated the Chandigarh Spinal Rehab, a rehabilitation centre for persons with acute injuries and disabilities, in Chandigarh earlier this week.

Sunil Raj, the head of therapy at the centre, said only a few quality rehabilitation centres exist in India that cater to just 15 per cent of persons with spinal cord injury every year. During his seven-year stint at Vellore-based Christian Medical College’s rehabilitation facility, Mr. Raj worked with hundreds of persons with multiple disabilities due to injuries or non-traumatic causes.

Services at the rehab centre include independent living skills trainers, peer counsellors, and rehabilitation specialists, including doctors on call. The centre also offers inpatient (20 beds) and outpatient services. Rehabilitation is offered for spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, cerebral palsy, stroke, amputation, etc.

Outpatient services include therapy-based healing for common ailments like arthritis and pain, age-related conditions, children with special needs and post-surgery related issues.

The centre is an initiative of Sai Aasra Paraplegic Rehab Centre, a trust registered in Amritsar under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882.
