Police action against forum activists comes under criticism

Even while the Salem Citizens Forum (SCF) has moved the Court here seeking bail for Piyush Manush, its convener and two other members, who were taken into custody by the police on Friday, various organisations fighting for human rights have criticised the police action and have expressed their solidarity with the Forum.

Mr. Piyush Manush and two others were arrested on charge of preventing the work on the construction of flyover at Mulluvadi area in the city to replace the existing manned railway gate.

Bail pleas

Meena Sethu, educationist and senior member of the SCF, told The Hindu that separate bail pleas on behalf of all the three has already been moved in the Judicial Magistrate Court. The bail pleas are expected to be taken up tomorrow.

The SCF sources said that the Forum has been receiving messages of solidarity from various movements and individuals on this issue, since the arrest of Mr. Piyush.

S. P. Udayakumar, anti-nuclear activist and convener of the People’s Movement against Nuclear Energy, has expressed his support to Mr. Piyush in the social media.

Social activist ‘Traffic’ Ramasamy has also condemned the arrest.

The Dharmapuri People’s Forum has also condemned the arrest of activist Piyush Manush along with two other activists.According to D. Balasubramani, coordinator of Dharmapuri People’s Forum, the arrest of the activists who had made critical interventions in the local civic environment and its ecology has dampened the spirit of activists. The DPF has called for the immediate release of the activists.
